Julianna Duque

I’ve literally been sitting in the same spot for an hour and this sentence is the only thing I’ve typed. I feel like Spongebob right now.

Anyways, I am 20 years old. I’m an Aquarius. I am a Kinesiology major, and I am a junior.

Hi! My name is Julianna and if you’re still reading this, I want to thank you! Most people just call me Juli and Jules, but my family calls me “Iya”, or “Ate Iya” if they’re younger than me. I got that nickname when I was a baby. I was born in the Philippines and in Tagalog, the word “iyakin” translates to “crybaby”. Apparently I cried so much that my parents decided to give me a nickname with a root word that relates to crying and being an inconvenience to people around me (honestly, things haven’t changed much since then).

I’m an introverted and shy person. One of my least favorite classes I’ve taken at State is Comm 103. I hated talking in front of my classmates. I’ve had trouble getting involved in campus the past two years because of how terrified I am of talking to new people, and also because of the fact that I commute from Chula Vista, which is about 30 minutes away (an hour when there’s traffic in the morning). I’m challenging myself this year, though. I plan to get involved and join a club related to my major and maybe even one involved with community service. I’m overwhelmed just thinking about having to talk to new people, but also a little excited.

My family relocated to San Diego, California when I was 10. Since I’m now 20 years old, I can officially say I’ve lived in California for half of my life, and also for a whole decade! I adore living in San Diego. It is a beautiful city with endless destinations that you can never get enough of. It has perfect weather most of the year, and the different beaches never disappoint those who love the water, me included. If you can get used to the sand that gets everywhere, the beach is an actual paradise. Another reason why I’ve been wanting to go to the beach a lot lately is because of Pokémon Go. There’s just way too many Pidgeys around my neighborhood and the beach is the perfect place to break the continuous streak of catching Pidgeys. Unfortunately, I have not seen nor caught a Lapras that everyone else seems to have.

Another thing I love to do is play my piano and guitar. I learned how to play the flute when I was in high school, and I’m not sure if it counts as a club, but I was in the SDSU Marching Band last year as a flute player. It was definitely one of the most memorable things I’ve done at State because it was the first time I made a new friend since I had started college. Music is a big part of me, and if I had enough patience and discipline, I would definitely switch to being a Music major. Sadly, I have neither the patience nor discipline to ever excel in anything music-industry related.

Let’s see… Uhh… I prefer being behind the camera instead of in front of it. The only time I willingly go in front of a camera is on Snapchat when I can put the dog filter on my face and look half-decent for 24 hours. I want to learn more about photography because the only pictures I’ve ever really taken are on my iPhone 6. I’ve captured some pretty cool pictures with it though.

- iPhone cameras aren't that strong
- I actually had to use my friend's telescope to get this picture (thanks Angie!)
- The moon is beautiful

I wasn’t originally going to talk about this, but my life is literally so boring that I’m just going to put this fact out there. In short, I’m obsessed with two groups that are completely different from each other. The first one is Fifth Harmony. Fifth Harmony is the very first group I got obsessed with. They’re on tour right now and one of their shows was supposed to be in the Open Air Theater here at SDSU. I paid a lot of money to be able to meet them but about three weeks ago I found out they cancelled their SD show. I’m still a little bummed about them canceling but at least my bank account isn’t in the single-digits anymore. The second group that I absolutely adore is a South Korean boy group called BTS (방탄소년단). I don’t want to start talking about them right now because this post will turn to an extremely long read for anyone reading, and no one wants that. I just love them to no end, and if you search them up on YouTube I promise you won’t be disappointed, especially with their dances and their clean, precise choreographies.

Well, that’s basically it. It took me about four hours to write less than 900 words, and I feel like that says a lot about how good I am at expressing myself (not very good). If you stayed long enough to read this far, THANK YOU again. Seriously. My life is boring so thanks for reading this. If you made it this far let me know and I’ll bring you chocolate/candy next class.

  1. Hey Jules!

I had a fun time reading your blog and getting to know you. I want to start off by saying, you did a fantastic job and you are not boring at all! It is super cool you where born in the Philippines and I am guessing you know how to speak both Tagalog and English. That is awesome! I wish I knew how to speak another language. Alsooooo you know how to play interments! In my eyes that is automatic amazing. I wish I new how to play an instrument. I got a guitar for my 15th birthday and still to this day do not know how to play it. That is just plain sad. I am impressed you know how to play multiple instruments. You are far from boring!

I commute from Escondido, which is 30 minutes away from State in the opposite direction as you so I feel your pain on traffic. It is not fun. Being a transfer I plan to join clubs this semester too! Cheers to new friends!

    See you in class,
    Allison Starr

  2. Hey Julianna!

Stop, your life is not boring. I should know because I see you almost everyday. But still, it was pretty interesting reading how you introduced yourself to people who don't already know you. It’s really cool reading about the different aspects you think are what make the most important parts about yourself, though I know there is so much more amazing things people don’t know about you yet. By the way, I so agree with you on how beautiful and diverse San Diego is. I remember a couple years ago a lot of people I knew always talked about how badly they wanted to leave San Diego because of how boring it is and how they could never find anything to do. Honestly, San Diego is a place I can see myself settle down in (but not before I travel all over of the world). Oh and I really love all of the pictures you have taken. You have always taken really nice pictures and I can always count on you to make me look good in them (well, at least better than I already look lol). Maybe you should think about taking some photography classes over at the community colleges? I think you’d really like it. Lastly, I just want to talk to you about Fifth Harmony, because I understand your pain. I still can’t believe they cancelled their concert. Hopefully one day we can meet them in person without crying about our empty bank accounts afterwards.

    See you later!

  3. Hello Julianna. How are you.

First off I would like to point out that talking about one's self isn't easy though the professor portrayed it as something easy like when she made us write ten things about ourselves. Whether or not I myself wrote my blog correctly is mystery however I did had fun writing it.
Also even though you considered yourself an introvert with enough time that can change for the better. I myself am a introvert but only in school. I work for a YMCA so that means I have to be talking, playing, and taking care of kids who a few days I did not know anything about. So encourage you to go out of your comfort zone and try something new around your community.
In addition, I must say though I have lived in San Diego for most of my life there is still mush I don't know about it. We often forget that we live in a vacation destination. Also if your looking for water pokemon go to the beach or any park that has water somewhere near it you are more than likely to find at least one.
One last point I would like to make is that you seem to live an interesting instead of a boring one. You play instruments, your photos are well done and you like Fifth Harmony.
Also your 20 years old I myself at that age didn't do as much.
    Well that enough from me.
See you later and hope for the best.

    Sincerely,

    David Bobadilla

  4. Hi Julianna!

I noticed we have a couple things in common like being a little introverted and I dreaded Comm 103. I just dislike presentations, so good thing my major doesn't do too much of that. Those pictures are really amazing! They look like they were taken with one of those really expensive cameras. It is really aesthetically pleasing to look at. Trust me, your life sounds more exciting than mine especially since you can have fun playing the guitar or piano. I am also into Pokemon go but all of my Pokemon are weak because I only catch the ones near my house or when I go on a run. I feel sorry for Fifth Harmony cancelling their concert which was so random and unexpected. Out of all the places they chose San Diego, I hope you feel better since you have more money! Also, one big thing I liked/noticed was that you liked BTS! They're one of my favorite groups ever!

    See you in class!

  6. Hello fellow blogger,
I enjoyed this blog right from the very beginning with the tasteful addition of the SpongeBob picture as it was a good start. I noticed you identify as an Aquarius, meaning that you are an avid reader of horoscopes? The part I was particularly interested in was your musical background. I myself play multiple languages and found it both impressive and noteworthy that you had been in the marching band here at State.

Your fellow blogger for the semester,
    -Kina Bramlette
